The installation of a second pipeline, which will run parallel to the first, will allow Énergir to extract natural gas from the storage site in Saint-Flavien more rapidly to meet our customers' heating needs during periods of extreme cold, commonly known as “peak energy periods.”
The project
To further optimize and secure our gas supplies, Énergir will install a second natural gas line parallel to the one between the Intragaz storage site in Saint-Flavien and the delivery station in Lévis (Saint-Nicolas), via Saint-Apollinaire.
The installation of this second pipeline will allow Énergir to extract natural gas from the storage site in Saint-Flavien more rapidly to meet our customers’ heating needs during periods of extreme cold, commonly known as the “peak energy periods.”
By optimizing our infrastructure in this way, we will reduce our dependence on natural gas transportation suppliers, which is the most expensive supply method for Énergir and our customers. The gas will be stored at Intragaz during the summer, when it is cheaper to buy it, and will be useful to meet energy needs quickly, for example when it is very cold in the winter.
This new infrastructure will not bring more natural gas in the pipeline. Our Vision 2030–2050 leads us to reduce our volumes overall and to rather inject where we have value, for example during peak energy periods. Énergir’s infrastructure must support this Vision and therefore be adapted.
The project in detail
- Énergir plans to install the 23.6 km natural gas pipeline, mainly within the right-of-way of the existing easement.
- The project also includes:
1. Installation of a metering station at Intragaz's existing site in Saint-Flavien
2. Installation of a motorized block valve at the mid-point
3. Installation of a launching and receiving traps at each end of the future natural gas pipeline at existing sites
4. Moving the trap to the existing site in Saint-Flavien
Timeline
The layout
The total anticipated project layout is 23.6 km. The majority of the work will be within the existing right-of-way and only 0.6 km requires a new easement adjacent to the existing one. Temporary work areas on both sides of the permanent easement are required for the installation of the second pipeline.
Mobilization on site is scheduled for October 2022 and construction is expected to continue until May 2023. Énergir intends to make every effort to minimize the impacts that this work could cause.
Since the majority of the route is in a wooded area, on private lots, and not on roads, the work plans to create few issues for traffic.
However, when installing the pipeline at road crossings, a short-term closure may be required. If necessary, agreements with the MTQ and/or municipalities will be made, and the information will be available on the project web page as soon as the work begins.

This work is carefully planned, monitored and performed by our engineering and construction teams. Evaluations are also conducted so as to address specific concerns. The risks of this type of work are no different from those found on any construction site. This type of work is performed regularly by our teams, who are trained in the use of safe procedures.
Our technical specifications, the current standards that we respect, and our best practices are all guarantees that these risks are reduced to their minimum level. In the event of an emergency, we are trained to respond quickly and effectively in collaboration with the local emergency services.
This is an operational project. Énergir is installing a new pipeline to distribute natural gas more rapidly during periods of extreme cold. This will allow us better supply security by being less dependent on our suppliers.
With this new infrastructure, there will not be more natural gas in the system. Our Vision 2030–2050 leads us to reduce our volumes overall, but rather to inject where we have value, during peak energy periods for example. Énergir's infrastructure must support this Vision, which is why we must adapt it to our new energy offer.

Natural gas
- Natural gas is 95% methane (CH4).
- Methane is produced in nature by living organisms and decomposing organic substances.
- It is lighter than air and disperses into the atmosphere when released.
- It is naturally odorless. We add mercaptan, a substance that releases a similar smell to rotten eggs, which makes it possible to detect it at very low concentrations in the air (less than 1%).
- Natural gas is not toxic or water soluble.
Advantages of natural gas
By replacing petroleum products and coal, natural gas helps to reduce greenhouse gases by 32%. Natural gas emits significantly fewer atmospheric pollutants and makes it possible to nearly eliminate all sulfur oxides (SOx) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), pollutants which are, among other things, responsible for acid rain and health problems.
